Treatment of trigger points
What are trigger points?
Trigger points are painful points that feel like “knots” when touched. In fact, these are shortened muscle fibers. In the presence of trigger points, biochemical processes and local blood circulation are altered. The affected muscles are painful and weak. The reasons for their appearance are numerous:
- excessive or chronic muscle overload
- psychological stress
- muscle injuries
- direct trauma
- Other
How does the treatment work?
Compression of a trigger point can cause local tenderness, referred pain, or a local twitch response. The local response to twitching is not the same as a muscle spasm. This is because muscle spasm refers to the contraction of the whole muscle, while the local twitch response also refers to the whole muscle, but involves only a small twitch, no contraction.
The treatment of trigger point targets:
- improve local blood circulation
- to reduce pain
- to extend the structures and reach the physiological movement volume
